The Little Theatre of Jean Renoir: Quartet of little stories in reference to human respectability and beneficence of country living (instead of subsisting in a dehumanized city forest). Renoir’s celluloid swan melody might not be amid his best, however still has much to offer. Marie Antoinette: Visually sumptuous account of an adolescent’s voyage from Vienna to the Palace at Versailles and the throne of France. Author-director Coppola’s Marie (as played by Dunst) is a modern-day gal, with contemporary music set contrary to the pomp and circumstance of the 18th century life. Starts to tire eventually and ends with a cry, not a smash although there’s much to like here. Illicit: Cast includes Barbara Stanwyck, James Rennie, Ricardo Cortez, Joan Blondell, and Charles Butterworth. Self sufficient-minded Stanwyck cherishes Rennie, although doesn’t desire matrimony to tarnish her cheerfulness. This is a boring film with way too much talking. Cast includes Marcello Mastroianni, Claudia Cardinale, Anouk Aimee, Sandra Milo, Barbara Steele, Rossella Falk, Madeleine LeBeau, Caterina Boratto, Edra Gale, and Mark Herron. T (81 minutes, 1931)

The Big Trees: Viciously ambitious lumberman Douglas runs afoul of a religious sect and nearly everybody else around him in this cornball outdoor melodrama. The King and I: Phenomenal film adaptation of Rodgers and Harnmerstein Broadway musical, based on novel filmed in 1946 as Anna and the Baron of Siam (and redid as Anna and the Emperor). Kerr plays widowed English schoolteacher who voyages to Siam to instruct the Baron’s numerous kids, and finds handling His Highness her best test. Brynner gives the acting job of a generation, and was rewarded with an Oscar reconstructing his Broadway role. Kerr is charming and her harmonizing voice was dubbed by Marni Nixon. Melodies contain “Hello, Youthful Lovers,” “Getting to Know You,” “Shall We Dance.” Cast includes Deborah Kerr, Yul Brynner, Rita Moreno, Martin Benson, Terry Saunders, Rex Thompson, and Alan Mowbray. (133 minutes, 1956)

The Last Seduction: Pathologically malevolent and stunningly sensual female ditches her spouse, snatches the money he’s made in a drug deal, and escapes N.Y.C. to a tiny upstate town where she allures and bewilders a local gentleman who becomes her latest patsy. Fiorentino’s spicy femme fatale makes Stanwyck in Triple Indemnity look like Snow White! The movie is a scorching, seductive thriller from contemporary film noir master Dahl and author Steve Barancik. Cast includes Linda Fiorentino, Peter Berg, J. T. Walsh, Bill Nunn, Bill Pullman, Michael Raysses, and Zach Phifer. (110 minutes, 1994)
