Mobile Internet Navigation Devices are becoming more and more popular. However, much of this functionality, these days, is integrated into GPS systems or Smart Phones. Clarion has taken this technology to a new level and released, what they call, the ClarionMiND MID.
Clarion has extensive history with car audio and navigational systems. This knowledge, and expertise, has gone a long way with the MiND. Clarion has taken this knowledge and integrated it with other technologies, making MiND one of the most intuitive devices on the market.
Any functional piece of technology must have a good engine. The MiND has Intel’s Atom CPU, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth 2.0, together with a GPS receiver, 512MB of RAM and 4GB of flash-based storage.
The MiND would not be a proper navigational unit with its 4.8-inch touch screen display, with a resolution of 800 x 480. This screen allows for visible navigation of roads, even while you’re driving. Additionally, viewing videos and web pages are crisp as well.
Both the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth technologies are tightly integrated into the MiND. This technology gives you the ability to connect to the internet from home, the office, or other hot spot locations. Bluetooth can be used - in conjunction with cell phones - for internet connection. The current model of the MiND does not have “always-on” connection; however, later models will include the integration of either 3G or WiMAX.
Linux operating systems are not the most user-friendly; however, they do provide for a stable, flexible foundation. Clarion used this Linux, as an operating system, for this reason. It provides consumers with good performance along with a solid backend. Many applications are available, out-of-the-box. Applications like Google Maps, Google Earth, YouTube viewer, email clients, and document and media viewers. These applications make your experience real.
Battery life, on most GPS systems and smart phones, are not optimal, but are definitely acceptable at a minimum of 4 - 6 hours. This is where Clarion fell short; the battery in the MiND only lasts 90 - 120 minutes on a full charge. Battery lifespan will vary depending on running applications and phone settings, but 1 1/2 - 2 hours is just not up to par.
The MiND would not be a true navigational system without access to thousands of points-of-interests, right at your fingertips! Clarion went a little further with this unit however. The MiND ties into the audio system, of your car, whenever it’s docked in its docking cradle. This allows for higher levels of musical entertainment - while driving - in addition to a new level of expectation with GPS systems.
You can expect to find this particular model for around $649.99. Remember, this model does not come with 3G or WiMAX so connectivity will be limited. There are still no official numbers concerning the price of a new unit that does have 3G or WiMAX technologies.
Clarion wanted to provide consumers with a new way to experience entertainment and navigational systems. They have accomplished this goal with their tight integration of the unit into the audio system of any car. Clarion has also exceeded functional expectations with the number of applications available, along with the navigational software that comes with the unit. They were a bit short on the concept of “always-connected”, but if you can wait, it sounds like they are working on this.
