Many people feel that high quality printing must inherently be expensive. The Brother HL-1650 proves that to be incorrect. The Brother HL 1650 Toner provides high quality, fast printing for the home office or the small business workgroup. The HL-1650 can provide printed page outputs of up to 16ppm. Print quality can be selected to up to 1200 dpi. An automatic duplexer is provided in the HL1650 as a standard feature.

Brother has provided two data input ports on the HL-1650. These two ports are USB and parallel. When the HL-1650 is included in the small business workgroup environment, the 10/100 Base TX Ethernet print server must be purchased. Utilizing the HL-1650 in the stand alone mode, connected to one computer through the parallel port provides the highest print output rate. When the HL-1650 is placed into a network environment, print output rate decreases by approximately 33%.

Memory upgrades are available for the HL-1650 from Brother. These memory upgrades increase the memory from the 8mb that is provided to memory chips that expand the memory to 136mb. The memory upgrade provides an uninterrupted output rate when the printer is in a networked workgroup environment.

Lowest costs per printed page are achieved through use of a specific toner cartridge and drum combination. The T560 toner cartridge is a high capacity toner cartridge that will print 6500 pages. The DR500 drum has a 20,000 page capacity. When this toner cartridge and drum combination is installed in the HL-1650, printed page rates are estimated at $0.02 per page.

Brother provides the Quick Print utility setup with the HL-1650. This utility can be placed either in a dedicated window or on the system tray of the computer. Initial setup of this utility provides for options that will be utilized in printing the documents. These options include dedicating which size paper goes in which tray, layouts for multiple pages and type of paper used. In the Driver Properties section, features such as watermark inclusion are available. Graphics are often light or dark when printed. To insure proper graphics quality, the density and contrast of the graphics can be controlled manually.

Brother has recognized that all documents do not require printing at the 1200 dpi setting. To facilitate this, Brother permits printing as low as 300 dpi quality. While the quality of printing at 1200 dpi is outstanding, the 300 dpi quality allows quality printing at high speed for preliminary versions of documents. Speed at which the documents are printed is dependent upon several variables. These variables can be, whether graphics are included in the document and the density of the graphics in the document, the print quality desired and as previously mentioned how the printer is connected to the computer or network.

The automatic duplexer provides worry free duplex printing. The automatic duplexer provides a variety of options including six different alignment settings. Should the user choose to stand over the machine and supervise the printing, Brother created a manual setting for duplex printing on the printer.
